"Pure, unadulterated, raw, atmospheric. I would leave the review at that. Nothing else. But that is not doing it justice. This is so awe-inspiring and the impression this Russian duo's first release leaves is so indelible that I have to fight the urge to leave the review at "amazing".

'Graveforests and Their Shadows' is one of the strongest and most depressive releases to hit black metal in a very long time. Pulling the doom inspired ten-minute drones, Walknut's first release, at only six tracks (two could be considered an intro and outro, though not labeled as such), will leave your eyes watering and body covered in goosebumps. I do not get this emotional about anything. I cannot do this album justice with my trite words. Listen to it. If there is any fiber of your being that yearns for something new, mournful, bleak, completely encompassing, overwhelming and graceful... go listen. I will not liken them to any previous works, although they liken themselves to black metal giants Burzum and Strid.

Stringsskald and Ravnaskrik have made a masterpiece here and I will say that without hesitation. Epic and raw with interludes of the blackest vocals. Evoking an image of a fir grove in the December moonlight on the harsh Russian steppe, glowing after a fresh snow fall. Amazing. They have set the bar high with this as their first release, and featuring members of Temnozor and Forest, I don't think we could have expected much less."

"As heavy metal becomes increasingly globalized, the boundaries of its innumerable subgenres more universally accepted, it becomes less and less surprising that bands from areas as far-flung as Canberra, Jerusalem, or the Faroe Islands would choose to incorporate the instruments and styles of their native folk music into a metal framework. And yet for every fully integrated folk-metal fusion act like Ireland’s Primordial, there are dozens like Taiwan’s ChthoniC or Finland’s Ensiferum, who treat their ethnic elements as augmentations (at best) or novelties (at worst)--an erhu solo here, a Humppa rhythm there, and that’s the extent of it.

Birushanah’s staggering debut, Akai Yami, released in 2007 in Japan but only now available domestically, suffers from none of these problems of appropriation. The Osaka band melds traditional Japanese music with the heaviest strains of extreme metal, resulting in a bastard of exotic discomfort and good ol’ leadfoot crunch. Guitars crush in eerie Japanese scales, stacking wide-open chord chugs into uneven phrases and progressions that never feel resolved. A fretless bass adds to the slipperiness of Birushanah’s tonalities, and two additional percussionists clank through the herky-jerky doom riffing like imperial soldiers marching to battle. Most of the Japanese screaming on the title track sounds desperate and terrified, every bit as unhinged as the warbly noh singing that precedes it. A koto swoops in toward the end, an eye of grace and calm at the middle of the metallic typhoon that swirls around it.

The two main tracks on Akai Yami hover around the twenty-minute mark, and really they have to. Birushanah’s music evolves, gets faster and more convoluted, breaks down for bass solos and lockstep percussion lines. Like the courtly gagaku music that inspired it, each discrete section of “Kairai” feels like a separate gesture of a grand ceremony. Majestic, yes, and slightly unapproachable because of its foreignness. But doom metal proves a very capable lingua franca, and Birushanah use it to unlock the latent heaviness of traditional Japanese music, opening up some exciting new possibilities for metal in the process. Akai Yami is as brazenly original as heavy metal gets."

"Take the intellect approach of French black metal and mesh it with the Joy Division post-punk style and put Alcest main man Neige in the conductor’s spot and you get Amesoeurs. Formed in 2004 by Neige along with Phest guitarist Fursy Teyssler and bassist/ female voice Audrey Sylvain, Amesoeurs released their first EP, Ruines Humaines, in October 2006. The music is intense, the vocals are wrenched with emotion as Neige screams like no other vocalist I’ve ever heard, the drums are mathematical and precise, and the overall instrumentation is beyond that of any simplistic black metal band. Amesoeurs, with only 3 songs in their arsenal as far as we know of, has already proven to be an underground behemoth waiting to take it’s place at the crown of experimental black metal music.

Bonheur Amputé begins with a post-punky black metal riff that rolls into a burst of emotional angst as Neige releases his pain staking scream as the guitars dominate the intense atmospheres of the song. The breakdowns with the bass and guitar are what make the song most unique as it follows a familiar Joy Division song pattern. The progressive nature of the music overall is intense even with the strained atmosphere of emotional depression. The song is a perfect opener into the next best 11 minutes of my life.

The building synth and acoustic passage work of the opening of Ruines Humaines shows the true beauty of the band’s nature. As the electric guitars come in with the acoustic, Amesoeurs brings something new to the table in the line of Alcest and My Bloody Valentine, at least until everything explodes into an aura of harsh screams and ballistic drum beats and guitar riffs. The song is beauty even in it’s most intense moments. The essence of musical perfection that can pull one to tears (if they can understand French). The song ends with an experimental piece of industrial sounds playing in a catchy and sporadic rhythm.

Faiblesse Des Sens is again much different as Audrey takes vocal position with her beautiful singing. The song is mostly acoustic building and has a folky/ Ani DiFranco vibe that strikes me as beautiful and daring for a black metal band. The guitar work is catchy and the drum work is easily at it’s most dominate. The song breaks into an electric guitar solo as Audrey continues to sing. After picking up into full electric guitar the song jumps with progressive brilliance, making it the perfect ending to a perfect EP. There is absolutely no flaws on this release except the fact that it’s only 16 minutes long, leaving me yearning for more."

"Alcest is the one-man-project of the French multi-instrumentalist Neige, native of Avignon (France). As devoted black metal fan he founded Alcest around 1999 and a first demo contained traditional black metal. After that the music evolved towards a more esoteric, atmospheric direction. The EP 'Le Secret' and the split CD with Angmar were witnesses of this development. Now Alcest is picked up by the label with a fine taste for eccentric, yet engrossing musical projects (Prophecy Productions) for no less than five albums.

'Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde' is the first one and it offers six compositions to the listener - all about six or seven minutes long - on which you can fall in reveries and dream. Guitars with lots of reverb and distortion (think on Katatonia, or even more on Agalloch) pass into acoustic guitar interludes. Vocals are dreamy and nostalgic. The lyrics are in French, but if you do not pay special attention to it, it is not that obvious. I know this sound kind of strange, but let us say that the sound of the voice is more important than words. Neige seems to be a pretty exceptional person: a hermit who prefers to be alone most of the time and only wanders through the city at night to be inspired by those blackened impressions. This music includes much transparency; it is an ode to the purity of nature in a very refined way.

It is ethereal music from another world, just as the title suggests. Finally it gets a bit difficult to keep focused, because the songs are pretty similar to each other, but when you are in the mood, this wall of guitars with lyric leads all over and cozy acoustic guitars will give you a sea of tranquility and contemplation in this hectic life. And we all need moments like that.

UNGOD - "Circle of the Seven Infernal Pacts"

One of the earlier bands from the second wave in Germany, UNGOD unfortunately only managed to spew out one album. After the demo tape Magicus Tallis Damnatio in 1992, UNGOD went on to rerecord those tracks for the album that was to be released one year later, Circle of the Seven Infernal Pacts. The CD being released in 1994 on Merciless Records, it's now been out of print for over a dozen years sadly limiting the availability of this unholy work.

UNGOD continued on to make a few splits and one EP before calling it a day. Magicus Tallis Damnatio was reissued on CD by Merciless Records in 2002 (with a 1995 rehearsal of "Firestorm, Ashes... Genocide" that appeared in its final form on the Conquering what Once was Ours EP) along with the UNGOD side project BAXAXAXA's equally awesome 1992 Hellfire demo, and is worth tracking down just as much as this album.

What it sounds like: I think this can be classified as Power Violence, i.e. the stuff played by the likes of Spazz and Romantic Gorilla, i.e. a chaotic hybrid of death metal and hardcore with lots of shifts and changes, but ANb have more of a metal sound than most power violence acts, with more precise riffs and generally better musicianship. Things get especially chaotic thanks to the use and abuse of a drum machine in place of one of those pesky sacks of flesh.

I'll put it this way: If they did a remake of Back to the Future, in the part where Marty pretends to melt his father's brain with a walkman, he would be playing Agoraphobic Nosebleed instead of Van Halen.

CELTIC FROST - "Demos 84 & 85"

Simply because CELTIC FROST didn't release any demos doesn't mean they didn't record any. This is some of them; elusive rehearsals and live material from these legends of black metal as well as a variety of other stuff. In that fuzzy time in 1984 after HELLHAMMER but before CELTIC FROST officially released anything, material was recorded. In those recordings, we get to hear primitive rehearsal versions of upcoming CELTIC FROST songs as well as some HELLHAMMER classics that were recorded only three months after Apocalyptic Raids. Only four months after that (three months after the second two-song rehearsal) included here, Morbid Tales was recorded. 1984 was a busy year for these guys. The information listed on the back of the CD isn't entirely correct, so some corrections need to be made. This is how it breaks down:

Tracks 1 - 5 are in a category called "Demo 1985." Not quite. The first four tracks here are supposedly higher generation mixes of the Emperor's Return songs. Note though that "Journey into the Fear" is an unreleased track, and a rather fucking good one at that. "Return to the Eve" is just a crappier dub of the Tragic Serenades song.

Tracks 6 - 11 are titled "Demo 84 (Session 6-84)." Near as I can tell, this is correct. A bit after starting "Aggressor," they start playing an instrumental version of "Extermination Day," which is a cover of the mighty ANGEL WITCH.

Tracks 12 and 13 are titled "Demo 84 (Session 7-84)." I believe this is also correct. The alternate intro to "Morbid Tales" absolutely kills the album version if you ask me. Much more direct.

The final four tracks, 14 - 17, are titled "Live San Diego 15-6-86." That's pretty much what it is.

So the title of this bootleg release is misleading. But it's very early CELTIC FROST with some HELLHAMMER songs. That translates to necessary listening.

HADES - "Alone Walkyng"

Lost in the sea of relatively better-known Norwegian black metal bands like DARKTHRONE, MAYHEM, BURZUM, EMPEROR and a dozen others, HADES (who went on to become HADES ALMIGHTY) was signed to Euronymous' Deathlike Silence Productions but never got a chance to release anything on it for obvious reasons. As a result their debut album, 1994's ... Again Shall be, was released on Full Moon Productions. This first album was a masterpiece of epic pagan black metal, differing in sound from a good majority of the other Norwegian bands.

But before that, in 1993, HADES released a short demo, Alone Walkyng. It consists of three songs, the first two ("Unholy Congregation," "Hecate (Queen of Hades)") were rerecorded for ...Again Shall be and the third ("Alone Walkyng") was rerecorded for their second album The Dawn of the Dying Sun. Here you find the songs in their original, rawer versions. The obscure demo was mercifully rereleased on CD by Wounded Love Records three years later. Considering it's only twenty minutes long, there's a lot of great black/viking metal to be heard here.

VEIL - "Dolor"

Some bands just produce a sound that has to be heard to be believed. VEIL emit American NSBM in a slow style taken to a melancholic extreme, plodding along with mournful riffs and distant, tortured vocals. This demo-turned-album is consistently solid throughout, the only part seeming out of place is the sudden BURZUM cover in the middle of Dolor. While a very competent cover, it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the songs as it picks up the pace and, being a cover, obviously doesn't remain quite consistent with VEIL's sound; it would have been better placed at the end of the album as something of an afterthought. That's really a minor complaint, as the brilliance of this album still shines through regardless. The CD edition of this presents us with an extra track not found on the original demo, "Endless Night," adding over 11 minutes to the release.

AXIS OF ADVANCE formed from the still-warm ashes of SACRAMENTARY ABOLISHMENT. Picking up right where SACRAMENTARY ABOLISHMENT left off, AXIS OF ADVANCE began their existence with the release of a 3-song MCD of crushing black/death war metal. With only 500 copies of this 1999 release, it tends to be forgotten in the wake of their more recent releases despite being some of their most vicious and primitive material. Landline features two songs that were written for what was meant to be SACRAMENTARY ABOLISHMENT's third album (they also get rerecorded for AXIS OF ADVANCE's debut album Strike), as well a SACRIFICE cover. Expect nothing less than top-notch apocalyptic nuclear hate-filled blackness!

MESSE NOIR - "Mandal - Gate of the Calling"

MESSE NOIR present us with an 18-minute long full-length of black war metal not unlike the chaotic works of BLASPHEMY. Released in 1995, Mandal - Gate of the Calling went (and remains) relatively unnoticed. Guess that's not surprising because the album blows by so fucking fast. But, for fans of the BLASPHEMY sound, MESSE NOIR will be a welcome listen. An undated (but old) MESSE NOIR interview spoke of an upcoming second album; as far as I'm aware, there has been nothing from the band since.

AMAKA HAHINA - "Aheah Saergathan!"

With AMAKA HAHINA being a member of the Black Legions (having TORGEIST mainman Beleth'Rim at the helm), their reputation is bound to precede the actual material. That's a shame, because Aheah Saergathan! is more than strong enough to stand on its own merit. What one finds here is dark ambient of the most sinister sort that sounds like malevolent entities scuttling around you just out of sight in a dark forest, as typical as that may sound. The sounds here are predominantly vocal; whispers, whimpers, growls and moans echo around the listener while repetitive and trebly keyboards serve only to add to the evil atmosphere. Occasionally all the sounds come together and build up into intense, caustic crescendos that are nearly unlistenable in their overwhelmingness. Probably a love-it-or-hate-it release, listeners in the right frame of mind will find evil black ambient of the highest caliber here.

Bestial Antihuman Evil is a 2002 THRONEUM MCD, released Weird Truth Productions and limited to 666 handnumbered copies. Not nearly enough copies if you ask me, this is one of the best releases in this style in recent memory.

Enter Bucket Full of Teeth, the grandiose brainchild of Brad Wallace and William Killingsworth, alumni of the seminal early-'90s hardcore outfit Orchid. Originally intended to be a somewhat structured power-violence project, the group soon progressed into a monstrously ambitious studio project that combined elements of death-metal, ambient and stoner rock. After releasing three consecutive seven-inches (I, II, and III on Youth Attack) and playing only six shows, the band began work on new material in 2002. Three years later, IV proves to be an epic and challenging hardcore record that fits perfectly on Level Plane's roster.

The sheer terror afflicted by Bucket Full of Teeth's sound stands out immediately. After the introductory rumble of "Imperfect Vibrations," "Capital Distracts and Imprisons" explodes with frantic blast beats that rapidly switch to a death-metal breakdown and then to (Level Plane label mate) Breather Resist-like metal-core. This sort of blink-and-you've-missed-it intensity is prevalent throughout IV -- each song shifts through an arsenal of forms in often less than a minute. These spurts of aggression are usually followed by passages of ambiance, which weave the songs together, as exemplified on the brilliant shift from "The Path" to "Comfort Made Us Passive."

BRANIKALD - "Rdyandalir"

BRANIKALD's output has been consistently solid, churning out repetitive, distant, cold and esoteric black metal from the Russian wastelands. One of the leading bands of the notorious BlazeBirth Hall (of whom FOREST is a member), BRANIKALD has churned out albums at an impressive rate since their inception in 1993 beginning with 1994's monstrous Stormheit demo-turned-album. Here we have 1996's Rdyandalir, probably one of BRANIKALD's more abstract albums. The two black metal tracks are followed by two more ambient songs that work well with BRANIKALD's style.

To go with my previous post of MAYHEM's Dawn of the Black Hearts is MAYHEM's live performance in Zeitz. Again, similar setlist and same lineup as Live in Leipzig (Leipzig was only two days later on the 26th), this one has sound quality comparable to Dawn of the Black Hearts. Listening to a song that's on this, Sarpsborg and Leipzig will reveal how truly different each performance was. This is another fantastic recording of MAYHEM at their absolute peak, and it boggles my mind that some people actually proclaim Ordo ad Chao to be the best thing released under the MAYHEM banner.

MAYHEM - "Dawn of the Black Hearts"

Contrary to popular belief, there's actually more to Dawn of the Black Hearts than the cover; it features a bitchin' live show from MAYHEM in early 1990. If you've heard Live in Leipzig then you know what to expect here; virtually the same setlist and the same lineup. The sound isn't the crystal-clear soundboard recording of Leipzig, but it's still easily listenable. But make no mistake, just because one has heard Live in Leipzig doesn't mean Dawn of the Black Hearts isn't worth listening to; the subtle differences in performances, vocals and different ambience from the crowd and stage banter make for a surprisingly different experience. Skipping over this release because of its inferior sound quality is a big mistake.

Also featured on this release is a 1986 recording of MAYHEM live in Lillehammer (tracks 9 - 11). It's four songs, two being CELTIC FROST covers and two being VENOM covers. This predates Hellhammer's involvement in the band with Manheim still being on drums, and Maniac was still on his first stint as MAYHEM's vocalist. If anything, an interesting look into MAYHEM's early days.

ABRUPTUM - "In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, in Aeternum in Triumpho Tenebraum"

ABRUPTUM is an infamous name in Swedish black metal despite not really being black metal, let alone music at all. I don't know what to say about this release. In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, in Aeternum in Triumpho Tenebraum is ABRUPTUM's second album, Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectére Me being the first and very similar in sound.

This isn't for everyone, as there's no real music here. Sure there's guitar sounds and drumming, but in this case it doesn't mean riffs or rhythm. They're just used for noise, and the end result is absolute chaos. Combine this with the rumours of band members It and All cutting themselves to produce real screams of pain. Whether that's true or not is ultimately irrelevant, because what you hear certainly sounds tormented.

On a side note, In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, in Aeternum in Triumpho Tenebraum is something of a landmark in that it was the final album to be released on Euronymous' label Deathlike Silence Productions, coming out about four months before his murder. Needless to say the Deathlike Silence Productions version is long out of print, but it was remastered and reissued on Blooddawn Productions in 1999, and that edition should still be available. This upload is a rip of the original DSP edition, and thus is not remastered.

ZYKLON-B - "Blood Must be Shed"

One of the earliest "supergroups" of the Norwegian black metal scene, ZYKLON-B consisted of the two EMPEROR mainmen Ihsahn and Samoth handling the axes and keyboards respectively, while SATYRICON's Frost beat the shit out of the drums. Vocals were handled by some chap called Aldrahn who appeared in a few bands here and there but ultimately disappeared from the scene. 1995's Blood Must be Shed was ZYKLON-B's only release of note, the rest consisting of rereleasing the EP on a split and the other having a lone remix of one of the EP's tracks. This upload is a rip of the 2004 reissue on Blackend Records which includes the remix, effectively compiling everything they've ever officially released into a neat, four-track CD.

N.B.: Samoth has stated that aside from similarities in name, his current group ZYKLON is completely unrelated to ZYKLON-B.

MORTIFERA - "Complainte d'une Agonie Celeste"

With all the Neige-mania going on right now with ALCEST, AMESOEURS and PESTE NOIRE, some of his early material seems to get forgotten. Hopefully still fresh in the minds of many, MORTIFERA's 2004 full-length Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera was a masterpiece of melancholic black metal with that bizarre and unique nostalgic French sound. A year prior to that album, a short MCD called Complainte d'une Agonie Celeste marked MORTIFERA's debut, featuring Neige and Sir Noktu Geiistmortt. While the brilliance of the forthcoming material had not been fully realized yet on this recording, one can certainly see how it led up to it. One major difference between the two is the vocals; while on Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera Neige does the vocals with his trademark blood-curdling screams, on Complainte d'une Agonie Celeste Noktu does the vocals leading to this MCD sounding virtually identical to his other band CELESTIA circa their album Apparitia - Sumptuous Spectre, which had shown up only a year beforehand in 2002. Noktu's slurry croak works, but pales immensely in contrast to Neige's tortuous vocals; this is probably the MCD's only real weakness, in that it defeats itself in the band's succeeding and superior release. The final song on this release, "Asbtracte-Negation-Ressureciay" was rerecorded for Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera and can be found on the album under the slightly altered titled "Abstrbve Negabvtiyon Rebssurectyion." Judging by the spelling in some of MORTIFERA's material, I think Noktu misses his days in the Black Legions band BRENORITVREZORKRE.

It is sad to note that Neige is now out of MORTIFERA, having been replaced by Diabolus of VROLOK and placing Noktu back on vocals.

MÜTIILATION - "Hail Satanas we are the Black Legions"

MÜTIILATION really need no introduction, only availability. Those who began listening to MÜTIILATION at Black Millenium (Grimly Reborn) are in for a surprise as the cold, thin, clinical sound of the newer output is not present. Instead the listener is greeted with a warmer guitar tone and live drums for an overall more organic, more passionate sound. Hail Satanas we are the Black Legions is MÜTIILATION's first non-demo release, and a key stepping stone for the classic Vampires of Black Imperial Blood to have ascended from. While hinting the depressive, melancholic sound of the upcoming full-length, it has its differences; it is more rhythmic as this EP frequently enters slower, melodic head-nodding moments.

Having been out of print since 1994, this vinyl EP was rereleased on CD in 2006 on Nightmare Productions. Fat lot of good that did, it's already a pain in the ass to find. This is a rip of that reissue.

DEMONIC - "Lead us into Darkness"

There really isn't much to say about this Swedish band. Forming in 1992 under the name DEMONIC MANIFESTO, they shortened it to simply DEMONIC in 1994 in time for their demo release, Når Mørket Faller. This three-song demo was picked up by Necropolis Records and reissued on CD format in 1995 with an additional track ("His Eyes Burn Hate") under the title Lead us into Darkness. In 1997, DEMONIC released a full-length album called The Empire of Agony on Necropolis Records before quietly disappearing.

DEMONIC may pale in comparison to other bands that performed the genre with more creativity, but despite their short existence and limited, non-groundbreaking output, Lead us into Darkness is a solid release that does not deserve to be lost in the shadows of time.

maudlin of the Well (commonly abbreviated as motW) was an avant-garde metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. Their music contained elements from many different genres including doom metal, indie rock, progressive metal and new age. They released three full-length albums before disbanding in 2003, these albums included: 1999's My Fruit PsychoBells...A Seed Combustible and 2001's Bath and Leaving Your Body Map. These last two albums were considered companion albums. The band had a consistent core membership, which consisted of Jason Byron, Greg Massi, and Toby Driver. Throughout its career a sort of "revolving door" of members and session musicians participated as needed.

maudlin's music, lyrics, and atmosphere dealt predominantly with the subject of astral projection. The band tried to find music rather than compose it. This was done through practicing astral projection and lucid dreams, from which the band were purportedly able to "bring back" pre-existing music from the astral plane (as stated by Toby Driver in the liner notes included with the reissued Bath and Leaving Your Body Map).

Five years after their previous album, Gorguts show the meaning of change, and more importantly, progression. Whereas their previous masterpiece, "The Erosion Of Sanity", was a somewhat typical Technical Death Metal affair, this one defies all categorization of music. Yes, Luc Lemay is still growling, and he has one of the most brutal and tortured vocals I have ever heard in my life. The man truly sounds scary. Yes, the guitars are still distorted and the drummer does play double bass and does blast beats. But that's where the similarities end between typical Death Metal and "Obscura" end.

I'm posting this because the new Cryptopsy is going to blow. If you are a fan of death metal, you more than likely know who Cryptopsy is. This album is heavy, brutal, and crushing, but it is even more technical. This album will have you crawling back for more. Lord Worm is very creative as a death metal vocalist. His screams, gurgles, and growls sound very demonic and tortured. Levausser's guitar playing is awesome. His riffs are very complex, yet catchy at the same time. He also plays plenty of Chuck Schuldiner-esque solos. Langolis' bass playing is unique, since he uses slap bass, which is different in death metal. Last, but certainly not least, is what I and many other metalheads consider to be the greatest drummer of all time: Flo Mounier. Sometimes I wonder if this man is even human. His spastic time and tempo changes, technical fills, and skull-crushing blasts leave me in awe every time.

FULLMOON - "United Aryan Evil"

FULLMOON originated circa 1993 in the heyday of Polish black metal alongside acts like GRAVELAND, INFERNUM and VELES. Hell even BEHEMOTH were still playing black metal. Then in 1995, FULLMOON put forth a little demo called United Aryan Evil. It was to be s a seminal release for NSBM, and is an example of early/mid-nineties Polish black metal at its finest.

FULLMOON's United Aryan Evil is ancient sounding, spending most of its time at a mid-to-slow pace and, dare I say it, the occasional quasi-folk-sounding riff... somewhat akin to a cross between GRAVELAND's Carpathian Wolves and Thousand Swords. That's not entirely surprising considering Rob Darken of GRAVELAND collaborated with FULLMOON on this release, both composing the intro and handling the sound engineering. There may be only three long black metal songs like the haunting "The Pagan Mountain" accompanied by three short ambient tracks, but it's more than enough to make this a classic Polish BM release. FULLMOON went on to putter out a few more rehearsals/demos before completely dissolving in 1997.

The original 1995 cassette release sped up the songs a bit, but the 2004 CD/LP reissue by Blutreinheit Productions corrected this, and is thus the demo as it was originally meant to sound. The uploaded version is the CD reissue at correct tempo.

Last Days Of Humanity is (was) one of the most shocking bands in the Grindcore scene, when their masterpiece, called Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration, was released back in 1999, they shaped a huge spot in the underground for themselves, everyone was talking about how amazing their music was and about how crazy their ultra-gore layout seemed to be. Some years later, after releasing an EP and after the band split-up, they come back with their final work, one of the most brutal albums ever released in music history.

"Putrefaction In Progress" shows a different band to begin with; I remember their past albums being super-catchy with mid-paced riffs and a couple of melodies here and there, but not this time. This new record is all about being the fastest most brutal and destroying band in the scene; I'm not trying to be a psychologist here, but it just sounds like these guys were irritated with their situation and they decided to blast their problems out or something.

Most of the songs have the same structure, which is 36 to 50 seconds of hostile blast-beats, rabid guitar-riffs and distorted bass-lines; there are few tracks that stand out from the others, "The Beauty Of Perfection In Sensible Cruelty" is one of them creating a vibe similar to the music presented in "Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration". Something is for sure though, yes they have mostly blasts in their disc, but I haven't found a band with a drummer as fast as this guy, I don't care about the way this guy explodes his talent, I just see that he is amazingly good and that's something remarkable for sure.

This album is not for the weak ones; even with the layout being partially mild (contrasting with their older artwork of course) the music is just very fucking brutal, and I mean Goregrind in its sickening best and not for the faint hearted that's for sure. Still this album fails to impress me, it's very good none the less, but the fact that they sacrificed their catchy-groove pace for an omnipresent blast-beat disappointed me badly. If you're a fan of the band you'll be more than pleased with "Putrefaction In Progress", but if you haven't heard their albums I think you better start with "Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration".

Crossover thrash is making a comeback. Combining the speed of thrash metal with the attitude of punk rock was pioneered by groups like D.R.I., S.O.D. and Suicidal Tendencies in the early '80s. These days, Municipal Waste is carrying the torch for that genre, and now British newcomers S.S.S. throw their hat into the ring.

Short Sharp Shock would have been right at home in the early days of crossover. The songs are short and potent, with riffs flying every which way and a melody or chorus poking its head above the fray periodically. In addition to the groups mentioned above, there are also elements of early Metallica in S.S.S.'s sound.
